Alwàn

“Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.”

Wassily Kandinsky

Alwàn is the Arabic word for colours and indeed colours deeply influence my soul. Growing up surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colours, I quickly fell under their powerful spell. As a child I recall being mesmerized by the colourful ‘toubs’ worn by the women in Sudan. The toub is the national dress worn by women today but one that carries a long legacy throughout history as it is believed to have been worn by Nubian queens of ancient civilizations, known as Kandakes.

Long drapes of vibrant colourful fabrics, from humble cottons to luxurious silks and chiffons, beautifully graced their bodies. I watched in awe as they regally moved. My dear friend, Mai Abdelmoniem, beautifully describes this vision in her enchanting poetry.

“I’ll cover my beauty with a brushstroke steeped in deep fiery colours. Twirling it gracefully around my body, I’ll wear these colourful plumes proudly.”

Childhood memories etched in my mind, sparked a love affair with colours and gemstones reminding us of the magic they bring. Gems allow us to celebrate the beauty of colours in a tangible way, much like painting on a canvas.

The Alwàn collection is inspired by and an ode to all those women who have coloured my life and to all the vibrant and powerful hues that have shaped my journey. Through the pieces and gems in this collection I invite you to celebrate the magic and beauty of colours.
